The Practical Driving Test
Prior to your test you should check your booking confirmation letter to ensure that you have the date and time of your test correct.
You must take your provisional licence with you. When the examiner comes into the waiting room he will ask to see your licence. He will then ask you to sign an insurance and residency declaration on his clipboard. Make sure the signature matches the one on your licence as the examiner will check it. He or she will then check with you that the address on your licence is correct.
You will then be asked if you want your instructor/accompanying driver to site in the back during the test. This choice is entirely up to you but is best to agree this with your instructor in advance. Be aware that if you do this might feel more self conscious and it will also affect the handling of the car eg you may need more gas when pulling away from stationery, you may need a lower gear for going up hills and more braking for going down hills.
If you decline, the examiner will normally ask you if you would like your instructor to listen in to the debrief at the end of the test.
Occasionally there may be a second examiner who will sit in the back of the car during your test. This examiner is not assessing your performance but is ensuring that the examiner conducts the test correctly. It should not make any difference to the outcome of your test, but again be aware of the implications of having another person in the car as mentioned above. Unfortunately you have no choice as to whether this extra person comes in the car although happily it only happens rarely.
The practical driving test lasts for just under 40 minutes. You will need to ensure that you have your driving licence with you and before you get in the car will be asked to read a number plate at a distance of 20 metres.
The test will include:
At the end of the test you will be told if you have passed. If you have the examiner will offer to keep your provisional licence and arrange for your new licence to be sent to you. You will be allowed to drive while you wait for your full licence to arrive.
On the test you may make no more than 15 driving faults (commonly called "minors") but no serious faults (commonly called "majors"). Whether a mistake is minor or major depends on how serious the mistake is in the context that it happened.
It is important that you are confident that you know that you are ready for the test before you take it. In the UK the average number of lessons taken to pass the test is 45 along with 10 hours of private practice.
