Gears

Lower gears give more power. Higher gears are for higher speeds.

As a guideline:

1st - for pulling away and driving at slow speeds 0-10mph

2nd - for speeds of between 10-20mph

3rd - for speeds of 20-30mph

4th - for speeds of 30-50mph

5th - for speeds of 50mph+

This is a guideline. If however you are going up hill, leave the gear change till you have reached a slightly higher speed. Listen to the sound of the engine.

When slowing down eg for a junction, you need to change down to the appropriate gear for that speed.  You can block change ie if you are in 4th and need 2nd, don't go into 3rd on the way. Go straight from 4th to 2nd.
