Theory test Resources
The theory test consists of 50 multiple choice questions with a pass mark of 43 out of 50 or 86%. The test is done on computer at your local theory test centre. The nearest theory test centre is in Workington at Solway House in Oxford Street. You have to pass the theory test before you can apply for the practical test, so it's important that you make good progress with this.
When you do the theory test make sure you read the questions carefully - it's easy to jump to a conclusion that you know the answer when careful reading may show they are asking something slightly different to what you expected. You will learn a lot that is relevant to your theory test on your regular driving lessons, but you will need to supplement this with a fair bit of study on your own. There are plenty of online practice tests, dvds and books that you can buy. Be aware that some smartphone apps and online tests only use a small percentage of the full theory test revision question bank, and it's important that you revise all subjects.

Hazard Perception
In addition to the questions there is a Hazard Perception part to the test. This consists of 14 video clips shown on the computer each lasting around 30 seconds. In total there are 15 hazards that you need to identify - 13 clips have just one scoring hazard and one clip has two. The hazards that you need to identify are the developing hazards - ie hazards that will require you to take action. So a person walking along the pavement will be a potential hazard (non-scoring) but if they then turn to step into the road they become a developing (scoring) hazard. If you click at the correct moment you score 5 points and then a decreasing number until 0 points if you click too late. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.
